The Gold Coast's latest mass transit system, the light rail stage 3, has finally opened to the public after a lengthy and costly construction process. This project, which cost $1.55 billion and took four years, has sparked both excitement and controversy among locals and businesses. The light rail now connects the bustling shopping precinct of Broadbeach to the stunning beaches of Burleigh Heads, with the state government estimating that two million passengers will use the network every month. However, the light rail has become a symbol of the city's struggle to manage population growth and the challenges of urban development. The project's history is a testament to the complexities of urban planning and the impact of public infrastructure on local communities. The first stage of the light rail, a 13-kilometre line from Gold Coast University Hospital to Broadbeach, took three years to build and cost $1.61 billion. The initial estimate for stage 3 was $709 million, but the final cost blew out to $1.55 billion due to costly upgrades to underground sewer and water infrastructure. The construction process has been disruptive for many businesses along the route, with some even relocating to avoid the impact. Despite the challenges, some businesses have thrived, with vintage clothing shop owner Jess Firkin reporting a 70% increase in trade after moving his shop to a location about 100 meters off the new light rail route. The light rail project has also faced opposition and cancellation. The original plan included stage 4, which would have connected Burleigh Heads to the airport, but local opposition and the potential for gentrification led to its cancellation. The LNP government cited local opposition and an estimated cost of $5.7 billion to $9.8 billion for stage 4, but Labor senator Murray Watt argued that the state had not provided a firm business case, making it impossible to determine the exact cost. The future of the light rail project remains uncertain, with a network of larger buses, dubbed the "GC Surfer," set to carry passengers south of Burleigh Heads without dedicated lanes to bypass traffic. The GC Surfer will also link the Gold Coast's inland suburbs, providing an alternative to the light rail. The city's population is expected to reach one million in the next two decades, and urban planning consultant Ned Wales emphasizes the importance of mass transit in major cities for efficiency and economic development. Wales believes that light rail is a crucial part of the solution for the Gold Coast's prosperity, despite the current "hesitation" towards public transport. The light rail stage 3 project is a complex and controversial endeavor, reflecting the challenges of urban development and the impact of public infrastructure on local communities. The future of the project and the city's transportation network remains a topic of debate and discussion, with the potential for further changes and developments.
