How Lagaan Changed Amin Hajee's Life: From Actor to Writer and Director (2026)

Amin Hajee, the actor and filmmaker who played the memorable mute drummer Bagha in the 2001 epic sports drama Lagaan, has revealed a surprising impact the film had on his career. Despite the movie's success and the opportunities it opened for him, Hajee admits that it "destroyed" him in an unexpected way. The film set such a high benchmark that nothing he received afterward could match it. Hajee's wife, Charlotte, was concerned about him sitting at home and turning down projects after Lagaan. This concern, coupled with director Ashutosh Gowariker's faith in him, led Hajee toward writing. Gowariker suggested he join him as a co-writer on the film Desh, which later became the acclaimed 2004 film Swades. Hajee's reluctance to accept projects was due to his fear of not living up to the respect he had earned through Lagaan. Aamir Khan and Gowariker's support helped him reinvent himself. Hajee gradually moved away from acting and established himself as a writer and later a filmmaker. Lagaan became a "university for him," teaching him about cinema and opening new doors in storytelling and filmmaking. He co-wrote Swades and worked as a writer on other films, eventually making his directorial debut with Koi Jaane Na in 2021.
